Fees & coverage

How much does a therapy session cost?

Individual sessions are 50 minutes and cost $150. Couples sessions are 50 or 75 minutes and cost $175 - $225, respectively.

Do you offer a sliding scale or reduced rates?

I hold a number of sliding-scale spots for clients for whom the full fee is a barrier. Email me to learn more.

Does my insurance or extended health plan cover therapy with a Registered Social Worker?

Many extended health plans in BC cover counselling with a Registered Social Worker. Check whether your plan lists "social worker" or "RSW" as an eligible provider. Coverage varies by plan, not by employer.

Do you offer direct billing to my insurance?

Not at this time, you pay per session and receive a receipt to submit to your plan.

Do you offer a free initial consultation?

Yes, we can start with a free 20-minute phone or video call to talk about what you're looking for and make sure it fits before you commit.

How long is a session, and how often do we meet?

Sessions are typically 50 minutes. Most clients start either weekly or bi-weekly and we adjust the rhythm together as things progress.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for 24 hours notice to cancel or reschedule whenever possible.

Online sessions

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Yes. Research consistently finds online therapy works as well as in-person for most concerns, including anxiety, OCD, depression, ADHD, and trauma work. Many clients enjoy the familiar environment, no commute, and having pets or comfort items on hand.

How do online sessions work?

Sessions run over Jane. You'll get a link by email when you book. You need a private space, a device with a camera, and a decent connection. No software to install.

Can I see you if I don't live in Kelowna?

Yes. I'm registered with the BC College of Social Workers, which means I can work with clients anywhere in British Columbia. Online sessions work the same as in-person, just over secure video from the comfort of your home instead of the office.

What to expect

What's the difference between a social worker (RSW), a psychologist, and a counsellor?

All three provide therapy in BC. Psychologists (R.Psych) hold a doctorate and can do formal psychological assessment. Registered Social Workers hold a regulated master's-level credential under the BC College of Social Workers. Registered Clinical Counsellors hold a master's credential through a professional association. For therapy itself, fit and approach matter more than the letters, though extended health plans differ on which designations they cover, so check your plan first.

What happens in the first session?

We start with what brought you in, what's been hard, what you've already tried, and what you want to be different. I'll ask questions and listen. You don't need to prepare anything or tell your whole story on day one. By the end we'll have the start of a shared plan.

How long does therapy usually take?

It depends on what you're working on. Some people come for just a few sessions around a specific issue; others stay longer to work on more complex concerns or simply because they enjoy the dedicated space therapy offers them. We check in regularly on how things are going. You decide when therapy feels complete for you.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes, what you share stays between us, with the standard legal limits: risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else, a child or vulnerable adult needing protection, or a court order. I'll always explain these limits in our first session.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No, you can book directly online, no referral needed. A few extended health plans do ask for a doctor's note before they'll reimburse counselling, so check your plan if you're claiming sessions.

What if we're not a good fit?

Fit matters more than anything else in therapy, and it's okay to say so. If it's not working, we can talk about what would work better and if that's a different therapist, I'll help you find one. No hard feelings, that's a good outcome too.

Who do you work with? Do you see teens or children?

I work primarily with adults.

Practical details

Where is your office? Is there parking?

In-person sessions are at Clarity Okanagan — Landmark 2, #210-1708 Dolphin Ave, Kelowna. Parking is available on two sides of the building. There is an elevator available.

Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?

I offer evenings on Tuesday and Friday as well as limited Saturday appointments between 10am-2pm.

What should I do if I'm in a crisis?

Therapy isn't a crisis service. If you're in immediate danger, call 911. In BC you can also call or text 9-8-8 (Suicide Crisis Helpline, 24/7), call 310-6789 (BC's mental health support line, no area code needed), or call 1-888-353-2273 (for Southern Interior).
