Trauma Therapy & EMDR
Difficult experiences shape us. They don't have to keep defining us. Trauma therapy is a careful, paced process of reducing the hold a past event has on your nervous system, your relationships, and your sense of self.
My work is trauma-informed: therapy moves at your pace, safety comes first, and I'll never ask you to relive what you're not ready to revisit.
What I help with
- Single-incident trauma and PTSD
- Complex and developmental trauma
- Birth trauma and medical trauma
- Trauma underlying anxiety, depression, or relationship patterns
- Difficult life events that still feel unresolved
About EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy developed for trauma. It uses bilateral stimulation alongside guided attention to memories so the nervous system can reprocess and store them differently. EMDR doesn't require you to talk through every detail, it works with how the memory lives in your body and brain.
We use EMDR when it fits, and we layer in CBT, ACT, and somatic-aware practices when those are a better match. The plan is built around you.
Common questions
A few things people often ask about trauma therapy and EMDR.
Will I have to talk in detail about what happened?
No. Trauma therapy goes at your pace. EMDR in particular is designed to work with how a memory is held in the body and brain, it doesn't require you to talk through every detail of what happened. We always build safety and stabilization first.
How is EMDR different from regular talk therapy?
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or sounds) alongside guided attention to a memory so the nervous system can reprocess and store it differently. Many people find it reaches traumatic memories in a way talk therapy alone doesn't.
How long does trauma therapy take?
It depends on what you're working with. A single-incident trauma often takes fewer sessions; complex or developmental trauma usually takes longer. We check in about pace and progress as we go.
Can I do EMDR online?
Yes. EMDR works well in online sessions using guided eye movements, self-tapping, or audio cues. Many clients across BC do all of their trauma work with me virtually.
